Tracking hike | Mission Trails

Little over a month ago we went on a tracking hike led by docents who are experts in identifying animal tracks in Mission Trails.  Here you see them showing us how you can draw an "X" in the middle of a coyote track without the lines crossing the toe pads, which you cannot do with a dog print.

This tracking knowledge came in handy when we lost our very own house cat - who was killed in our own backyard by coyotes early one morning after we left our backdoor open for our dog to go out.

We found the telltale coyote tracks behind our shed.  Watch your little pets carefully, neighbors!  Coyotes are apparently amazingly good at jumping fences.
